The title of this workout is no exaggeration. It is super basic. So basic it could be construed as beginner level and boring. But the level of this workout is entirely up to you. I’ve done enough of Angie’s step cardio workouts to know before I even started I would need more to make this workout effective for me. I wore an 8 pound vest and started with my step at 8 inches.
Super Basic Step Aerobics is the day 8 workout in AngieFitnessTV‘s Fit Over 40 Fitness program. In Angie’s Fit Over 40 workouts that I have done thus far, she creates an approximately 10 minute circuit that is repeated. And when I say repeated, I mean it is the exact same circuit. She just edits it so that the exact same circuit replays. I’m okay with that BTW. She does this for a reason. At the end of the circuit, she challenges you. Now that you’ve been through the circuit once, can you work harder the second time? Then she offers suggestions on how to increase intensity. For this workout the suggestion is add risers and/or wear a weighted vest. Angie is only using the step platform (4 inches) and no vest. I started the workout with an 8 pound vest and my step was 8 inches, so I was already working harder than Angie. And I did feel I was getting a good cardio workout with those additions. But the step choreography was so basic that I felt I could do more. Just to keep it interesting. So the second time through the circuit I added more risers, raising my step to 10 inches and added weighted gloves. BTW–there are no specific arm movements during this workout, so the gloves just add 2 more pounds. With those additions I was very glad that the step choreography was so basic. The workout suddenly got intense! In fact, 6 minutes of the second circuit I was in my peak heart rate zone according to my FitBit. So even though this is super basic choreography, how advanced it is, is entirely up to you. It can be beginner level or much more advanced.
Super Basic Step Aerobics is 30:35 minutes; 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down/stretch. Equipment: step with or without risers and a weighted vest for an optional additional push. Angie is only using the step platform (4 inches) and no vest. There is no step present during the warm up but as soon as the warm up is over Angie is marching behind the step. As the title indicates this is a very basic low impact step cardio workout. The moves included are a basic step on and off the step, corner to corner knees, and 3 knee repeaters. That’s it. Nothing else, so very basic.
